“For personal reasons, ANZAC Day was one of the more difficult days in the year – like many immigrants to Australia, the Critic had had an immediate experience of war, the machismo that fuelled war, and the rhetorical devices that made killing and trauma appear honourable and desired. Those effects did not seem as obvious to Australians with tenure, who insisted that ANZAC Day was merely theatre of patriotism and defence, or at best a kind of outlet for the passions of empire.”
