We’re now open for fiction submissions, and we want yours.
Since our first issue in 2007, we’ve published fiction from many emerging writers that have since become celebrated names. We’ve also published fiction from established writers, including Christos Tsiolkas, David Foster Wallace, Rick Moody, Karen Russell, Tom Cho, Douglas Coupland, Heidi Julavits, Rebecca Giggs, Margo Lanagan, Jim Shepard, Frank Moorhouse, Romy Ash, Diane Williams, Sam Lipsyte, Sheila Heti, and Andrés Neuman.
In The Lifted Brow we tend to publish fiction that is ‘new’ in some way, whether it be different/original/experimental in respect to form, or viewpoint, or style, or voice, or plot, or language—or any combo of all the above. You are blending genres? Great! You’re attempting something a little odd, or untried, or really quite difficult — that’s fine! Please send us your most ambitious work; we are forever eager to be convinced. The point being, if you’re not trying to be new/different/innovative/challenging, your piece of fiction probably isn’t for us.
Ultimately, we want fiction that is brazen and alive. Whether your writing is understated or overcaffeinated, it should throw punches that connect. A reader of your fiction should feel uncomfortable and/or provoked and/or titillated and/or curious to discover more.
We particularly encourage writers who are queer and/or trans and/or of any colour, religion, gender, and/or have a disability, and/or are rad and excellent and canny, to send us work.
If you’re writing very short short stories—stories under 100 words—please send ten to twenty at once, in a single document. We also love love love long fiction – 5,000 words and above. Even 10,000. 15,000! What we’re trying to say is that any and every size is okay by us.
There’s no limit on the amount of pieces you can submit, but be sensible. You should only submit one piece at a time.
This particular submissions window closes midnight AEST on Sunday April 24th. Right now we are looking for fiction from both Australian and international writers.
If you have any questions, please email them to info@theliftedbrow.com, or you can ask us over Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.
We look forward to reading your work!
